Lanai - "The Challenge at Manele"

During a week long vacation to Maui, we took a day trip to the island of Lanai. A fast motor cruiser took across the channel in about 40 minutes. As we neared Lanai, a school of dolphin swam and jumped alongside the boat's bow. We took a hotel courtesy van from the boat dock over to the golf course, called "The Challenge at Manele". It is a Jack Nicklaus-designed course that traverses the hills above Manele Bay, affording beautiful seascapes from every hole. There's another course on the island, the Greg Norman-designed "The Experience at Koele" in the higher elevation interior of the island. I'll try that one next time.

After the round, we went to the luxurious resort hotel at Manele Bay to look around and have something to eat. It is a beautiful hotel with Asian decor throughout. We had some wonderful appetizers at the pool-side restaurant. This hotel is where Bill Gates stayed during his honeymoon. He booked every room in the hotel for his guests and entourage. In fact he booked every room in both hotels, all the golf tee times at both courses, and provided other compensation to all the businesses for sealing off the island from all tourists.
