Lanai - "The Challenge at Manele"

During a vacation to Maui, we took a day trip to the island of Lanai on a fast motor cruiser. We rode across the channel in about 40 minutes. As we neared Lanai, a school of dolphins jumped alongside the boat's bow looking for handouts.

A hotel courtesy van picked us up and took us to the golf course, "The Challenge at Manele" designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course traverses the hills above Manele Bay, affording breathtaking seascape views from every hole. Another course, "The Experience at Koele" designed by Greg Norman is located in the higher elevation interior. I'll be back to try it next time.

After the round, we ate some wonderful appetizers by the pool-side restaurant at Manele Bay Hotel. This is where Bill Gates stayed during his honeymoon. He booked every room on the islands' two hotels for his guests and entourage. Furthermore, he booked all the golf tee times at both courses, and provided other compensation to businesses for sealing off the island from all tourists.
